THE white, two-story building on Jalan Chairil Anwar, Central Besusu village, East Palu, Central Sulawesi, appears conspicuously large inside a 45-square-meter housing complex. The National Democrat (NasDem) Party office was a legacy of Ahmad M. Ali, who led the party in 2013.

Ali, now 51 years, is the deputy chairman of NasDem, led by media tycoon Surya Paloh. He entered NasDem when the position of Central Sulawesi NasDem chair was left behind by Yusuf Lakaseng, who chose to join the Perindo Party—a NasDem splinter led by another media businessman, Hari Tanoesoedibjo. Mat Ali—as Ahmad Ali is known—replaced him at the party with the slogan “national reform.”
