The Nanggala Tragedy
There are reports that Nanggala-402 was not prepared for combat training. The 40-year-old submarine was riddled with problems before it sank. The Navy claims Nanggala was in solid condition and underwent routine maintenance.

AT around 4am on Wednesday, April 21, KRI Nanggala-402’s crew did not answer radio calls. For over one hour, the submarine carrying 53 crew did not respond to calls from the controller during a combat training in the waters of Bali. The situation worsened when Nanggala failed the deadline to surface at 5:15am. Helicopters and warships that participated in the training could not detect the 40-year-old German-made submarine.
