Jemaah Islamiah’s Mask of Charity

Jamaah Islamiyah members—recruited from various channels, such as universities and charity organizations—are using businesses to raise funds. Two JI members confess to Tempo.

WAHYU Hidayat and four others routinely joined training on becoming Jamaah Islamiyah (JI) members in 2013. For two months, they were trained on JI’s vision-mission and structure several times. “(There were) no paramilitary training,” Wahyu told Tempo at the National Police Headquarters in Jakarta, Thursday, November 26.

According to Wahyu, the meetings took place in the open, at various restaurants, in order to avoid suspicion.
