How Tommy Fought the Law

Tommy Suharto has stirred some controversial legal waters by bidding for clemency while asking for a judicial review of the Supreme Court’s sentence. Legal experts say the two steps are mutually contradictory. It may set a bad precedent that other convicts could exploit.

Let alone the wind, even the law cannot open the gates of the home of Hutomo Mandala Putra, alias Tommy Suharto. And let alone arrest him, as of last Sunday just finding the youngest son of former president Suharto had proved beyond the capabilities of state prosecutors and police. They were left standing in front of Tommy’s home at Jalan Yusuf Adiwinata number 4, Central Jakarta.
