The government has shown increasingly intensified enthusiasm to reposition Bank Indonesia (BI). This in keeping with the principle and spirit of independence inherent in Law No. 23/1999. Pursuant to this law on the central bank, the government and BI, formerly a unity of institutions, are now two distinct entities that are expected to cooperate, though sometimes on opposing sides.
