This year’s unhusked rice price slump is a recurring nightmare for farmers. Why can’t the government anticipate a situation that repeats itself every bumper harvest?

In the coming years, will our farmers still be prepared to plant paddy? "I’ve had to sell six cows for the last two years to cover losses in rice cultivation," said paddy farmer Jalal, 46, recently. For the harvest period this year, he will have to sell his dry harvest unhusked rice (GKP) for only Rp750 per kilogram, far below the government floor price of Rp1,095 per kilogram as of January 2001.
