Clinging to a Lifeline

Bank Century could have sunk if Bank Indonesia failed to convince the government that the Savings & Loans Agency should take it over. The central bank’s supervision is, however, being questioned.

AROUND a hundred or so of Bank Century customers met in the Arya Wira Room on the first floor of the Atlet Century Hotel, Senayan, Jakarta, on Thursday afternoon last week. These customers, with on average more than Rp2 million in their accounts, were all competing to ask questions about the fate of their savings as well as about the continuation of the bank.
