A Muhammadiyah council issued an edict that smoking is religiously unlawful. However, NU still holds that it is not strictly forbidden.

A RELIGIOUS meeting, which took place at the head office of Muhammadiyah, on Jalan Teuku Cik Di Tiro, Yogyakarta, on March 7, was attended by about 20 figures from the Fatwa Division of the Tarjih Council, an important organ of the organization. The religious talks ended with an important decision: changing the fatwa (Islamic edict) on smoking from mubah (permissible) to haram (unlawful).
