World-class corporations failed to pass the pre-qualifying stage of the Umbulan water project in East Java. A number of state-owned enterprises were also unsuccessful. Are there efforts to favor private national companies?

UNPLEASANT news reached Deputy State Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Sumaryanto Widayatin at the beginning of August. His staff informed him that four SOEs failed the pre-qualifying rounds of the Umbulan water project in East Java. Widayatin erupted and immediately called deputy chair of the bidding committee Budi Susilo. Widayatin crossly questioned the committee's reasons for their decision in the Rp1.8-trillion infrastructure project
