Protection Requested Over Sale of High Octane Fuel

The competition between state oil company Pertamina and foreign fuel companies operating stations here is heating up ahead of the restriction of fuel subsidies. The government has been requested to protect Pertamina against its rivals.

On Thursday last week, a fuel pump on Jalan Menteng Raya in Central Jakarta stood empty. There was no queue of cars or motorcycles. In the next 10 minutes, only one motorcycle came in to refuel. Regawa, the owner, chose high-octane fuel for his motorcycle. "The octane [rating] of 92 in this fuel is just right for my motorcycle," he told Tempo in Jakarta last week.

So far, the Shell-owned fuel pump in Menteng has had fewer clients than that of Pertam
