Government bans on fruit, vegetable and flower imports have caused chaos in local markets. Some of the rules have now been relaxed, but damage has been done.

The fruit center on the second floor of the Johar Main Market in Semarang was deserted on May 1. A few vendors could be seen napping on piles of cardboard. Only one stall seemed busy, its owner stacking grapefruits and sapodillas on a table. The market accommodates 60 fruit vendors.
