Freeport wants to extend its contract to 2041. The new government will have to decide.

Whether Freeport will be able to keep mining in Papua depends on Indonesia's new government. Along with dozens of other mining companies, Freeport is in the middle of contract renegotiations. "Their contract extension depends on their seriousness in investing in Indonesia," R. Sukhyar, the Energy Ministry's director-general of minerals and coal, told Tempo.
