Rupiah Down just 4.4% Throughout 2014

A buying frenzy of US$s spooked the market in the last half of December as the rupiah peaked close to the Rp13,000 per US$ level, before settling at Rp12,700 per US$. Bank Indonesia (BI) had intermittently intervened and earlier upped its BI interest rate by 25 basis points to 7.75%, but apparently these measures had little impact in calming the market. The rupiah has been on a weakening trend towards the year-end, in part, driven by the strength of the US$ and the usual year-end demand for US$s, as corporates and market players close their books.
