A Whiff of Crime

A foul odor filled the warehouse on the Cikande-Rangkasbitung highway in Serang last week. Piles of three-meter-high animal feed made from offal and bones stood in the middle of the 7,200-square-meter building. Dozens of workers were busily packaging them into 20kg sacks.

Budiman, a warehouse keeper, said the feed came from 16 containers that had arrived in late September. Oddly, the goods document stated that the feed was derived from corn gluten meal (CGM). The majority of the contents, however, were meat and bone meal (MBM). "There was also no seal from the quarantine office at the agriculture ministry or from the customs and excise directorate general on the container door," Budiman said.
