THROUGHOUT 2001, the calm and quiet of Jakarta's financial center have often been disturbed by rumors of a banking collapse. However, by the end of the year, only one bank—PT Bank Unibank Tbk—had in fact collapsed. Formerly owned by Sukanto Tanoto, head of the Raja Garuda Mas (RGM) Group, Unibank made a Rp2.6 trillion loan—now non-performing loan (NPL) status—to PT Prima Energi Indonesia, a RGM subsidiary.
