The government’s plan to include Indonesia in the international maritime lane demands many fundamental and strategic changes. But as of today, no major ports serve as an international hub. Tanjung Priok Port’s small economic significance means the port cannot attract large ships.

The transportation ministry has been working on this problem, though its policies have yet to result in significant improvements. For example, encouraging the open
