Vying for Pilgrimage Flights

Several foreign airlines have shown an interest in the large market of Indonesians making the umrah pilgrimage to Mecca. The government has not yet given the green light.

Proposals from a number of commercial airlines from the Middle East, Africa, and Europe arrived one month before Agus Santoso was appointed director-general of air transportation at the transportation ministry, in February. But after nine months in office, Agus has not yet made any decisions on the matter. Folders of requests to open new flight routes are still piled up at the ministry. ¡°We must be cautious,¡± said Agus in mid-October.
