It is a requirement for Moslems once in their lives, but most Indonesians can only do it through a government monopoly. How do we free the holy Haj pilgrimage from corruption?

Oh, my God. Maybe those are the most appropriate words for what legislators were told last week about Indonesia’s government-organized Haj pilgrimages. The findings of the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) suggest the holy journey to Mecca has become a lucrative piece of business for the privileged few running it. Last week legislators got a chance to look at the findings. Diversion of funds amounted to a whopping Rp354.716 billion.
