Abunawas from Wakatobi

Destructive fishing is wreaking havoc on marine life in Wakatobi, Southeast Sulawesi. Local fishermen are encouraged to turn to farming on land.

SANNA, the owner of the fishing vessel, watched with a sour face as two coastguard officers boarded his boat. He was caught fishing illegally in the waters of the Wakatobi Islands National Park in Southeast Sulawesi. The man broke into anger when the officers asked him to produce his fishing permits. I have been fishing in these waters for years and never have I been asked to carry a permit, he barked.
