The mangrove forest in the town of Tarakan has become a comfortable habitat for the proboscis monkey in Kalimantan. But land opening poses a threat to the area.

SOFYAN Asnawie can now show to his Malaysian counterparts the pride he takes in the mangrove forest in Karang Rejo, West Tarakan, East Kalimantan, the excellent quality of which he always tells them. “When they come here, I take them to this forest,” Sofyan, a construction businessman in Tarakan, told Tempo on Wednesday last week.
