Mourning the Musi

The rubber industry has contaminated the Musi River. Companies refuse to spend money on revamping their waste treatment systems.

THE river really stinks. Some of the residents living in Kramasan hamlet on the banks of the river feel nauseated and giddy and they also vomit. As a result, they no longer dare to bathe in the river. “Aside from the black liquid, your entire body will be itchy if you bathe there,” said Sahrul, a resident in one of the villages in Kertapati, Palembang, South Sumatra.
