Half of the protected forests in Riau are destroyed because of an overlapping right of control between the provincial and central government.

The forest looks so dense and peaceful, befitting its title as a national forest park. The Sutan Syarif National Forest Park, located only 20 kilometers from the Riau provincial capital of Pekanbaru, comes as a relief to motorists traveling out from Duri after 120 kilometers of endless oil palm plantations and Chevron oil pipelines stretching out along the eastern section of the Sumatra Highway.
