A total of 6.7 million cubic meters of mud are being dredged from the rivers and lakes of Jakarta to ward off floods. Garbage poses constraints.

AROUND 30 scavengers were watching attentively the movement of a dredger on a pontoon floating in the Western Flood Canal near the Manggarai Floodgate, South Jakarta. Every time the machine poured mud from the bottom of the stream, they were racing to grab scrap metal, plastic and other items contained in it.
