IN some television programs, sailing along a river in Kalimantan by boat was once presented as an interesting and exotic experience. Shady trees growing on riversides made travelers stoop now and again so as not to brush against the hanging branches of the plants. The scorching sun found it hard to penetrate the dense foliage, leaving only flimsy rays reflected on the water surface.
