Accelerating the Apocalypse

National resources are being drained to pay the burden of Indonesia's debts. According to the Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi), the government has yet to demonstrate any intention of preserving the environment.

Regional autonomy does not always bring bad news for the environment. One promising example comes from Wonosobo, Central Java. The regional government there, following public pressure, has given the community the right to manage the forests. Residents around the forest will manage and, at the same time, preserve the forests of the Dieng Plateau.
