Encroachers in the Belly of Kerinci

Forest encroachment in the Kerinci Seblat National Forest reaches the slopes of Mount Kerinci. Conservation partnership with locals is established to deal with the issue.

A SINGLE meranti tree (Shorea) languished in the middle of a potato filed stretching along the hillside leading to Lake Belibis in Giri Mulyo village, Kerinci Regency, Jambi. The nearly dead, 10-meter tall and 50-centimeter wide tree stand witness to the forest encroachment in Kerinci Seblat National Park (TNKS). It is surrounded by scorched tree stumps whose diameter is comparable to the height of a person, which were burned down by encroachers
