Illegal mining is devastating the environment at an alarming rate in Kalimantan and Sulawesi. The local governments are helpless.

The pale moonlight is reflected on the river water and the morning mist still hangs in the air. It's 5am in the early hours of the day as Kondang, a 40-year-old resident of the unnamed village at the edge of the Kelian River goes into the water—not to take his morning bath, but to begin ngerebo, panning for gold from the riverbeds. As he begins moving his pan in a circular motion, Kelian hopes some little specks of gold will show up.
