FOR nearly a decade, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) has been unable to enforce the responsibility of companies that caused the forest and land fires from 2015 to 2021. Despite this, at least 19 corporations are obligated to pay state losses amounting to Rp20.7 trillion (about US$1.291 billion).

The Forestry Ministry admits to struggling to compel these companies to pay fines as the authority for execution lies with the district
