Mount Papandayan in West Java erupted without any warning. Could better monitoring by officials have helped local villagers?

Located 2,655 meters above sea level at the eastern edge of the West Java volcanic belt, Mount Papandayan overlooks a beautiful panorama—a lush green expanse of tea plantations and patches of edelweiss crowned by the three craters of Kawah Mas, Kawah Manuk and Kawah Nangklak. Two other craters, Tegal Alun-Alun and Tegal Brungbung, skirt the volcanic mountain just 28 kilometers from the city of Garut.
