AN e-mail from a friend in America showed up on Siti Maimunah's computer on Tuesday last week. It said newspapers there had carried reports on their front pages that Buyat Bay was not polluted. The Denver Post, a newspaper published in the city where the Newmont mining company is based, wrote: "Newmont Did Not Pollute Indonesian Bay." The Washington Post, a highly respected newspaper, headlined: "Indonesian Study Finds Mining F
