THE figures shown on the projection screen staggered everyone's belief: more than 1,100 hectares of mangrove forests in Jakarta were destroyed in the past four decades. It means that of 1,134 hectares of mangrove forests known to exist in the 1960s in the city's coastal areas, only 233 hectares remain.
