Fearing the Flu

Although the number of bird flu cases continues to rise, Indonesia is still in the third phase before it can be considered a national epidemic.

THE intensive care unit on the second floor of the Sulianti Saroso Infectious Diseases Hospital (RSPI), North Jakarta, has been calm for the past two weeks. Its sanitary halls seem gloomy, even though news of new cases of bird flu being treated at this hospital continue to be reported.

Two nurses in protective medical outfits immediately shout a warning just as Tempo tries to check on conditions at the ward. No. You cant come in, said one nurse.
