Tohari lived with his skin condition for five years before he was finally admitted to hospital. Despite all efforts, the hardening of his skin will not return to normal.

THE barber at the Taman Permata Buana Housing Estate in West Jakarta shuddered when he massaged his customer’s shoulders for relaxation—a normal procedure after a haircut. Tohari’s skin was inflexible, almost hard as a rock, unlike any customer the barber had ever met. The hairdresser decided to call it quits.
