Kings of Leon in the Judaean Desert
The expansion of Jewish settlements in the West Bank is the greatest impediment to Israel-Palestine peace. Strong international criticism has not in the least deterred Israel from its construction in the region it annexed in 1967. Negotiations are also bogged down. Why are settlements so important to Israel? At the end of February Tempo’s Purwanto Setiadi—through a program of the Australia-Israel & Jewish Affairs Council—visited several places in Israel, including the settlements in East Jerusalem. THE gas station in Almog is like an oasis in a desert. It is around 10 kilometers from King Hussein Bridge (or Allenby Bridge), connecting the West Bank under Israel and Jordan.
