Doing the Right Thing
How different things are in the Netherlands from Yogyakarta and Bandung. Both these cities developed dedicated bicycle lanes, but they have now been taken over by motorcyclist and sidewalk hawkers.

DOZENS of motorcycles stand neatly parked along the side of Jalan Diponegoro, Bandung, in front of the “Sate” Building. The sight on Sunday morning last week disappointed Wahyudin, 27, who felt that his rights as a cyclist were being robbed. Not surprising, given that the motorcycles were parked on a cycleway. “It is just a waste of money if in the end we’re not able to use it,” he complained.
