The Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies Willem Janssens chose to remain at Meester Cornelis when the British attacked in 1811. The small fort built in 1706 had been strengthened by his predecessor, Herman Willem Daendels, to become a defense camp on the Ciliwung River extending for 3.5 kilometers from the region of Pal Meriam to Kampung Melayau.
