Lost Statues

SINCE 1999, statues and sculptures considered vulgar or failing to reflect local mores have been looted, removed, demolished or dismantled.

In 2012, Pekanbaru, Riau, residents protested against the Tari Zapin statue in front of the Riau governor’s office, arguing that the statue was pornographic and failed to depict Riau’s traditional Zapin dance. The statue was not demolished and its name was instead changed to Tarian Rakyat (folk dance).
