MONA left Pulau Piai off the coast of Sorong in northern Papua just after midnight, moving slowly through the calm waters of the Raja Ampat group of islands.
Mona, who was born on Pulau Piai, moved south across the Seram Sea which divides North and South Maluku. But she was stopped on her journey as she entered the waters of Pulau Buton in Southeast Sulawesi where explosives are widely used in destructive fishing.
