Experts agree that even though the potential for earthquakes in Java is not as high as in Sumatra, the danger level is inversely proportional. One occurrence of a strong quake (higher than a magnitude of 6), could have an impact many times greater.

This includes earthquakes originating at sea. In addition to measuring the movement of land faults, Hasanuddin Z. Abidin, a geodesic expert from ITB, is also conducting research in the south of Java.
