The Architect of Sukarno’s Affection
PEOPLE who knew him seldom failed to recognize Friedrich Silaban (1912-1984). He never changed. Silaban was easily identified by his loose-fitting trousers matched with long-sleeved free-flowing shirts. Although empty, a pipe was almost invariably clutched in his hand. When relaxing at his home, Silaban liked to wear a sarong. Playing chess was his hobby.

As an architect, Silaban’s characteristic works were well-known by other architects. His works were functional, strong and paid close attention to the climate. He was a Christian, but won an award for designing the largest mosque in Southeast Asia—the Istiqlal Mosque. Former President Sukarno referred to him as ‘By the Grace of God’.
