The Plight of the Sea Gypsies

Increasingly, the Bajos are losing their fishing grounds—thanks to "development." The seas are no longer a prime source of living for the sea gypsies.

ONCE upon a time, a beautiful Bajo princess ran away from home when informed she would be married off to her own brother. Accompanied by several attendants she set out for the sea in a perahu. She was sailing near Sulawesi when tidal waves dragged the boat to land on the southern shores of the island in what is now the district of Bajo.

Not knowing where his daughter had gone, the king sent his men to all parts of the Nusantara archipelago
