The planned development of the Komodo National Park are rubbing up against locals' interests. Shots are even fired.

IT was one night at the beginning of November 2002. At high speed, the patrol boat Lajang sped through the waters of Komodo National Park, East Nusa Tenggara. The 40-foot vessel was heading for Loh Wia, a location on Komodo Island. It was hunting something. Based on a ranger's report, four suspicious motorboats had been sighted there. It was suspected the four boats were going to collect deer carcasses from a hunting expedition on the island.
