ARSYAD, a farmer from Gantarang Keke, Bantaeng, South Sulawesi, is one of the few who has fond memories of Monsanto. During 2000-2002, he planted a type of transgenic cotton called Bollgard, a product of the giant American biotechnology company. He used the "intercrop" system: four rows of cotton and one row of corn. His harvest was always overflowing.

On average, each year Arsyad reaped 2 tons of cotton and half a ton of corn per hectare. Previousl
