Illegal abortion is gaining ground in Jakarta. Every year, around 100 obscure clinics serve roughly 100,000 clients wishing to abort their fetuses. From the stuffy rooms on Jakarta outskirts, the practice is spreading to a number of elite areas in Central and South Jakarta. This business has a turnover of up to Rp200 billion a year, equivalent to the income of all public health service institutions in Greater Jakarta. Its chain of activities starts from village midwives to specialists, and involves security personnel.

THE chilling cycle is almost always related to happy moments, like year-end parties, school vacations, Idul Fitri, and Valentine's Day. There is an interval of one to two months. After the pause, maternity clinics in several parts of Jakarta face extra bustle. Teenagers as well as mature women are queuing in their pregnancy. They share the purpose of removing their fetuses speedily and completely.
