FOR eight days a large vessel flying the Chinese flag, MV Mandarin Sea, lay at anchor in the waters close to Central Kalimantan, about 15 miles off Kumai port, Pangkalan Bun. This made Yang Lan Shun, the ship’s captain grumble in exasperation. What was up? For eight days, he waited futilely for official documents so that he could set sail. Yet the documents were not forthcoming.
The ship had some 10 cubic meters of meranti logs on board.
