THE clock showed 5pm. Hundreds of people had gathered inside the Zuiderpershuis Hall at Antwerp in Belgium. They were professors from various universities in the country, students, activists, writers and political observers. The situation was calm, almost quiet, although it was soon to break. Two people among the crowd were seen escorted out of the hall.

Before the program began, the chief organizer explained why the two guests had to be ‘expe
