Amina Wadud:
No Muslim country is without extremists

SHE was born as Mary Teasley and in 1972 she embraced Islam. Then three years later she changed her name to Amina Wadud. She is active in Sisters in Islam, an organization that helps women victims of domestic violence committed in the name of Islam.

Her interest and activities in the study of gender and Islam has made Amina a progressive feminist. And she has gone far. On March 18, 2005, Amina became the imam of Friday prayers attended by men
