Although more than a quarter century old, he is still able-bodied. As a kiai (Muslim elder), his days are filled with guiding the 5,000 students in his care.
The remainder of his time is spent meeting various individuals, such as businessmen and military officials, often late into the night. They ask many things of this kiai. Top of the list: an audience with President Abdurrahman Wahid. "I gently turn them down, of course," he says.
