Fareed Zakaria:
Indonesia must play a greater role on Islamic issues

Acknowledged as a journalist and scholar of international relations, Fareed Zakaria demonstrated his wide knowledge of the worlds culture when he spoke at the World Culture Forum (WCF) in Bali last month. Culture, he said, did not determine the progress or the backwardness of a country. Culture is the key enricher of development, he said. He is convinced this is the time for globalization phase two: a country can become modern through its own culture, without becoming Western.

Zakaria came from a multicultural environment. Born in Mumbai, India in 1964, he grew up in the middle of a Muslim intellectual family. His father was a politician and an Islamic scholar, while his mother was editor of the Sunday Times of India newspaper. He left for the US to get his BA in history from Yale and later, a PhD in international relations from Harvard University. He remained in the US and became an American citizen.
