Lying Low on the Chao Phraya
The boat stood out from the others docked at the Tha Chin River in Mahachai, in Thailand's Samut Sakhon province. Besides being wider, it is covered in thick steel, painted red. Only a few men were seen on deck. Dressed in a blue mechanic's shirt, one was busy welding the deck. Sparks could be seen coming from the top of 96-meter-long boat. Two other men walked back and forth from the stern to the bridge.
As of December of last year, the MV ITFA-3 has been moored to the banks of the Mahachai, about an hour drive from Bangkok. This ship had plied the Indonesia waters for years. With a capacity of 2,340 tons, this ship was used to transport the catches of smaller fishing boats around the Merauke and Aru Seas.
